I decided to put some serious effort into improving my game in 2018. Wanted to be more than a recreational player and bring in at least 1K a month in extra income. This means I need to win 1 tournament per month at my local casino at a $65 buy in to meet the goal. I’ve got a stable job, well-paying job but a little extra cash always helps. As you can see from the photo I have been reading quite a bit. I have also joined a paid training site (Upswing) to help improve my strategy. While the fundamentals of poker are easy to learn (math and theory), the “feel†stuff I find much more difficult. It was for this reason I purchased the 3 books written by the author. I also purchased them because they appear to be some of the most recent books on the subject.I mainly play local MTTs where I face regs with whom I have established baseline non-verbal behaviors. I do however play a decent amount of MTTs at casinos where I don’t know anyone. In my mind the books needed to overcome that hurdle to be useful. I will definitely say that there are at least a couple of tells he discusses that show up reliably, even if you have never faced the opponent before. Aside from the theory and math books, I haven't read any better books than the 3 published by the author. I would read them in this order: 1) Reading Poker Tells, 2) Verbal Poker Tells, and 3) Exploiting poker tells. After the books, I would recommend his video series (www.readingpokertells.video) which uses actual poker footage to show you the tells in action. I found the graphical component strongly enhanced my learning and cemented the content of the books into my memory.Post purchase I had some questions about the video series. I am happy to report that the author promptly e-mailed me back and addressed the questions to my satisfaction. The discussion occurred between me and the author, not me and some publisher.I will be posting this review for all 3 of the books I purchased and read although I would still rank them as indicated above. If you don’t have time to read the books, or are a visually learner, then I would highly recommend the video course.
Elwood's adopts a concise, informal, straightforward and effective writing style to convey all he knows about poker tells. It surprises me that more low stakes players don't have more interest in this aspect of the game. It isn't always easy to convert this information into profit at the tables, but every once in a while something will occur that makes you glad you read this book, even if your observational skills are pretty rudimentary as mine are. I am confident that with time and practice (and Elwood's coaching) my live poker game will be significantly improved as a result of studying this material.
I've read all 3 of Zachary Elwood's books, and would highly recommend all of them. His first book was written in 2012 and the tells listed are just as relevant today as they were 5 years ago. You should read the books in order. First get "Reading Poker Tells", then buy "Verbal Poker Tells", and then his final book "Exploiting poker tells". They show how to think about poker tells in a very clear and concise way. The first two books will give you a strong feel of how to use tells and the third book will show if you've really comprehended the first two books. All of them are a must if you play a lot of live poker, or even if you just play live during the WSOP.
I bought this for my brother who has been into poker for a few years now. He read it all in 3 days and says it has really helped him on the table.

This is a great book! I have read ( or listened to ) all of Mr. Elwood's material. It gives you a nice framework to view behavior! Not just a list tells. I returned one book about $1/2. I thought it was short, Mr.Elwood refunded me and informed me this book was in the works...Well its here now and I am quite content. I recommend renting or buying the video series...I was reading this while waiting for my barber. Some of the elements in this book helped me establish rapport with my neighbors wife!Get it! Worth the 'read'
This book does a better job than any other poker tells book in providing real life examples to illustrate tells that actually show up in live games. Perhaps most importantly, it demonstrates HOW to utilize those tells in game. In some cases, the how is obvious or intuitive. But in other cases, a tell enables a thinking player to take a creative line that previously wouldn't have been considered without a physical read of high confidence.If you are just starting out with learning about tells, I would definitely recommend Zach's other two books first, since they provide a more organized framework for thinking about tells from the ground up. But if you want real life examples and strategies for how to implement the material into your game, Exploiting Poker Tells is the place to go. It serves as an excellent review of the previous material and his videos, and is one way to test or deliberately practice the knowledge you have gained.
